Seeking Translation Interns
(in Cantonese and Mandarin OR Spanish)

The Mencius Arts-in-Translation Internship provides an opportunity for individuals fluent in Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) OR Spanish to serve as translation interns in our programmed activities at the Mencius headquarters, Essex Crossing Community Center at 175 Delancey Street (Manhattan Lower East Side).

Organization
Mencius Society for the Arts was founded in 2003 as a 501c3 non-profit arts service and performance organization registered with the New York State. Mencius provides artistic, recreational and lifelong learning activities with focus on traditional and folk genres in music and theatre, martial arts, brush painting and calligraphy

Job Description:
The intern will be responsible for interpreting, translating, and documenting programmed activities; the intern will support the organization’s everyday operation and its long-standing mission to promote intergenerational connection around music, arts, and culture. The intern will work onsite at the Mencius headquarters, three or four half days a week (4-5 hours per shift).

Responsibilities:
-Observe, document, and keep text record in Chinese and English of day-to-day services at Mencius
-Conduct interviews, record and transcribe to produce text profiles and oral history
-Assist with general operation at the center: set up, opening, providing supplies, processing transactions
-Assist with preparation of concert flyers and programs and other promotional materials

Required Qualifications:
-B.A. or MA. studies in foreign languages, translation & interpreting, non-profit arts administration (or related fields)
-Excellent bilingual oral and written communication skills in Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) or Spanish in addition to English
-Proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; familiarity with basic video editing and posting on YouTube and social media Apps such as Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
-Experience in translation/interpreting preferred

Terms & Compensation
-Monthly stipend approx. $1200-$1300 (up to $13,000 per annual budget)
-Renewable w/ discretionary bonus and adjustments to PT staff position
